How to Proceed: Trouble with Monkeys

As I sit here watching Hawkeye (amazing BTW) I am grappling with the question that I have been for a couple weeks; what deck am I going to build for modern?

I have been going through the list for what few events have been going on and while I have 80% of most of the decks, the main villian of what I'm missing seems to be Wrenn and Six, and Ragavan. This has been a bummer since they are a key part of many decks that I like. With Wrenn and Six getting a reprint soon I really don't want to invest in them right now and since I'm missing a lot of cards from Modern Horizons 2, a few more boxes maybe in my future. So those decks are on hold for now.
So the hunt continues, I'm thinking either running with Temur Rhino which I'm only $100 cards off of, or BUG Infect which is sitting around $200 away. I'm an aggro and combo player so these decks are right where I want to be in terms of playing. The new Enchantress deck also seems like something fun as well, almost like one of my commander decks (I have a Sythis, Harvest Hand EDH deck).
I think what I need to do is some old school playtesting with some lands and a sharpie, I might even get fancy and print them out. This way I do not have to spend any money before figuring out what I want to play! Well the Hunt will continue and my list will grow as I figure out more decks that won't cost a couple fingers to compete.

I'll keep everyone in the loop as I do my testing and find what I want to play!

New Year, New Goals

Sorry for taking so long to update the MTG Whale blog, I know you've missed me! OK well, maybe not but a guy can wish right? So it's a new year, 2022! Right now we are seeing a return to more in person events so the team and I have been planning on decks and travel. I have finished up most of the sorting of cards  as I posted about before, almost everything is scanned in, I have to redo Gold and Lands, and I have decided what decks I am actually going to build! All of them! Well not all of them exactly but I am building five different decks and buying the missing cards for several other archetypes so I can do quick swap outs.  The first decks I worked on was bringing the two decks I had built to modern standards. Time to Get This Sorted Out

In the beginning there were cards When I started to get into this process of sorting my collection I didn't know what I was undertaking as the project kept morphing as it went along and the scope changed a few time. I am sure I now know exactly what I want to do with this, for the fifth time, ok maybe I still don't know for sure but I have a good idea. The original idea was to revamp how I stored bulk rares to make it easier to find them. My original inventory was to have anything over $5 as a playset into a BCW 12-pocket binder that is coordinated by color, then anything under $1 where kept in the bundle boxes and scanned in, really with no reasoning behind organisation. The cards between $1-5 where in a box by color.  Several things all came to a head at once that made me decide a new system of inventory was needed. That MTG Bicycle

Much like most of you, I haven't had a chance to play Magic in person at larger tournaments since 2019. Sadly this means most of my modern decks are out of date or out of meta. So now is the time to study the Mets and look for a deck that appeals to me! Luckily at my LGS there is an amazing group of course players who want to see our local group thrive. The decks that I had built back when I played was Mono Green Tron, Green Devotion, Simic Infect, and Golgari Elves. Barring the Green Devotion, which is my pet project rogue deck, all of these decks do still see play. Even if they do see play they have changed so I need to decide if it's worth updating or just to focus on new decks.
